Chapter 1(Recruitment)
It was back in 1939 august 30th a 28 year old man was down at the local Tavern depressed and lonely,his wife had left him and took his kids with her. Sitting there he decides to call for another drink then another man walks up and sits next to him and calls out "I'll have what he's having “Sitting there wandering who this man was he turns is head very slowly to the left and asks "May I ask who you are “The man replies saying "I'm probably just like you depressed, lonely and my wife has left me" “Yeah same here except I've also got kids, well since we are both sitting here depressed and lonely want to go out to the track or something make good use of this night while we still can sitting here and moping isn't going to do anything “Whispered Barry, A couple of minutes they both get up and walk out of the bar walking past some soldiers not even noticing them.
It's the end of the night and Barry has just got home so he lies down on his bed and starts to doze off when the ground starts to shake. So he quickly jumps up off the bed and hides under the table thinking that it was an earthquake he then realizes that the shaking was going longer than an earthquake and it was shaking hard enough so he gets up and peeks his head out the of the window and notices that a huge amount of soldiers were marching past in lines of about eight or ten he couldn't tell and behind them heavy armored vehicles and tanks, he quickly grabs his jacket and runs down stairs and stands outside and watches as the soldiers march past him and everybody else watching them march. A tall very buff man marches up to Barry and Starts to yell at him “What are you staring at Private""I'm not a private I'm not even in the army “Replied Barry."You are now “He says it quietly to Barry then he yells out to everyone crowded around him “We are getting every single man able to fight to join us at war, Because we’re heading into over near Germany in a couple of hours so pack your things and meet your new captain next to the light armored vehicle at the end of the road".
Barry then turned around and jogged slowly up his stairs into his apartment, He then grabbed a suitcase from underneath his bed and put it on top of his bed walked over to his cupboard and grabbed all of his clothes out of the cupboard and shoved them in his bag. The Sergeant then marches into the room and tips the suitcase upside down and tips everything out onto the floor, shoves a carry bag at him and a uniform then yells at him “Only bring items you’re going to need boy, There is even a chance you won't come back so don't even bother bringing clothes besides socks and jocks and the uniform I have just provided you “Barry replies yelling out "sir,yes,sir""That a way soldier “the Sergeant replies and marches out of the room. Five minutes later Barry marches out of his apartment in his uniform and his carry bag on his back marches down the street behind other men that were forced to go to war and men that joined on there on their own terms. Barry didn't even argue with the Sergeant about going like most men did because they wanted to stay with their families. A single tear then ran down Barry's eye while walking towards to truck, He stopped then turned stood there thinking for a while then walked over to a signup table were each man had to sign himself up and signup was mandatory for every man as he signed himself up he asked if he could borrow pen, paper and an envelope to send a letter to his ex-wife and kids to tell them he was going to war so he finished writing the letter then gave it to the messenger.He then started to march towards the truck then was confronted by his captain, thinking the captain was going to yell at him he quickly turned his head in fear then the captain said in a nice normal tone “what’s your name soldier””My name’s Barry sir “replied Barry in a loud and formal tone while still looking for Barry’s name on the list he says “Move onto the back of the truck soldier “Once again Barry replies saying “SIR YES SIR” and passed his bag to one of the men sitting on the truck then climbed on and had a seat. One of the men then introduced themselves there were seven of them not including him there names and ranks were, Private Halliday, Private Bennett, Medic Johnson, Radio Operator White, Private Jordan and two men who hadn’t signed up and their names are Steve and Keith ,they both had kids and were both happily married. They were so terrified for their families they were literally nearly shitting themselves .The captain then jumped onto the back of the truck and tapped the side and then it started to move Keith started to cry and wave to his wife and 2 kids who were a couple of months old. All the trucks started to follow behind their truck Barry asked the Captain “Where are we heading””Where going to the main headquarters for the United States army to get prepared to head out to Germany.As the trucks started to slow down pulling up at the army base barry started to get less and less confident to what he was gonna do in the army his head was telling him it was the right thing to do but his stomach was telling differently.
